“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” – Mark Twain

Are you going the extra mile in your life and in your business or are you staying with the crowd by doing what everyone else is doing? That little bit extra is the difference between being hugely successful and just doing okay with just enough to get by.

Imagine what would happen in your business if you made going the extra mile a daily habit. For example, if everyone in your industry made 3 calls a day and you stretched just a little bit and made a 4 calls a day.

Sales is a numbers game so by making that one extra call, you would be adding 5 additional prospects to your sales funnel every week. Multiplied by 52 weeks a year, that adds up to 260 additional prospects. Even if you took 3 months off, that’s still an extra 200 prospects!

This is a concept borrowed from the world of elite training. It’s called, “One more rep.” Elite athletes know that they can always do one more rep. In fact, at the highest level, the difference between the podium and placing in the middle of the crowd is that one extra rep.

What it comes down to is regular effort.

What you do each and every day adds up over the course of a year. It’s those extra investments you make in various aspects of your business and personal life that get you the exponential success.

It’s easy to say, “Okay, that’s enough. I’ve done enough today.” whether you work to the end of the day or sneak out of the office a few minutes early. Maybe you decide just this one time to stop after your regular 3 calls because “That’s good enough.”

That’s okay some of the time, like when you have had a particularly challenging week. But before you know it, “taking it easy” becomes a habit and you settle back into the comfortable zone of sticking with the crowd and doing good enough.

You know what? That’s exactly what you are going to get in return: good enough, so-so, mediocre, AVERAGE. When you are feeling low because things haven’t gone exactly as you had hoped is when you need to do that bit extra to lift yourself up!

Only you truly know if you are letting yourself off the hook too easily when you should be pushing to do that one more rep. Only you know if you gave it your all instead of stopping at 80 percent.

You have it in you to do more. It’s time to prove to yourself what you are capable of.

How to Go the Extra Mile in Your Business (and Life)

Make a list of critical activities and decide what one more rep looks like for each. Challenge yourself to reach that goal each and every day. If it’s too much to tackle all at once, try adding a new one each month.

Identify the excuses that keep you with the crowd. What do you tell yourself when you feel tired and overwhelmed? What prevents you from going the extra mile? Ask yourself if those excuses are true and imagine me whispering in your ear, “You can do it!”

Stay focused on consistent effort. Remember that what you do every day counts. Just as elite athletes can’t cram extra training the day before a competition, you can’t make up for those missed opportunities to go the extra mile in all at once.

Keep track of results and celebrate success! Visual reminders are powerful, and so is seeing numbers add up or days being crossed off toward a goal. Create a poster board of ‘going the extra mile’ and set milestones you are going to celebrate and reward yourself for achieving.
