Are you the leader of a business or team and having challenges with an employee or team member? Not to worry, the problem is likely that person so you can have them fixed, just like you would a car or computer.

WRONG! People are not broken and do not need to be fixed. There are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow in a willing environment and have them becoming greater leaders. Only if they are willing.

First off, YOU are part of the problem. Period. If you are in the relationship you are also part of the solution. What are you pretending not to know? Be willing to look at how you are contributing to the current situation and be part of the coaching process to find the best outcome for everyone. You may let that person go in the end, but only after you have taken ownership of your results and have a plan to create a different situation next time. Hiring a Coach or Consultant to come in and fix your employee is only a recipe for failure and frustration. Your employee will not get much out of coaching with the agenda to fix or change them unwillingly and you won’t get the results you are looking for without your increased accountability and awareness in the situation.

The blame of this loose/loose game falls to your hired gun who is likely kicking themselves for having taken the gig in the first place! If you are going to bring in some outside support, be open to the process and willing to look at yourself. That is where the real learning and change is going to happen that you can lean into for other challenging relationships in and out of your business.

Does this situation sound familiar to you? Were you the employee to be fixed or have you been the leader trying to fix someone else?
